Philosopher and critic who founded the mingei movement, teaching that the unsigned everyday objects of ordinary craftspeople hold a beauty fine art cannot reach. He coined the word mingei with the potters Hamada and Kawai, opened the Japan Folk Crafts Museum in Tokyo in 1936, and his essays reached the West as The Unknown Craftsman.
