Home, Crafts and Hobbies Atlas

Disputed Statements

Claims this atlas currently marks as unsettled or as tested and found false. A debated fact is one scholars hold competing positions on; a debunked one has been checked against the record and found not to hold. Both are kept in view rather than quietly smoothed over, with the reasoning that put each one where it stands.

Arts and Crafts Movement, OriginCredit for the movement's founding inspiration is usually given to Thomas Carlyle, John Ruskin and William Morris. A minority of architectural historians credit Augustus Pugin, writing more than a decade earlier, with reaching many of the same conclusions about the importance of craftsmanship and tradition that Ruskin and Morris are usually credited with working out in practice.

Majority: Carlyle, Ruskin and Morris named as the movement's inspirations (Wikipedia, opening section). Minority: Pugin's biographer Rosemary Hill argues Pugin anticipated the core ideas decades before Ruskin and Morris worked them out in detail; see the recorded dissent.

Crochet, OriginNo crocheted textile has ever been convincingly dated before the year 1800, even though the tool is simple and the materials would have been perishable; documented crochet, as the craft is understood today, is a nineteenth-century development, whatever undocumented folk practice it may have grown out of.

Currently States No crocheted textile has ever been convincingly dated before the year 1800, even though the tool is simple and the materials would have been perishable; documented crochet, as the craft is understood today, is a nineteenth-century development, whatever undocumented folk practice it may have grown out of.

Mainstream: no surviving crochet fabric predates 1800, and the first published instructions using the term in its modern sense appeared in the Dutch magazine Penelope in 1823. Three competing folk-origin theories claim a much older, undocumented ancestry: an Arab trade route into Spain and the Mediterranean, a South American tribal-ritual origin, and an early Chinese doll-making practice; none is corroborated by any surviving crocheted textile. See the recorded dissent.

Slow Fashion, DescriptionA deliberate slowing-down of clothing, set against fast fashion's speed and volume: local artisans, hand-sewn and small-batch production, durable construction and garments meant to be repaired rather than replaced. The name borrows its whole logic from the Slow Food movement, prizing quality, environmental responsibility and fair labor practice over throughput. It gives the home atlas's own sewing craft, and the broader upcycling ethic, a name for the economics that make hand production worth choosing over a factory line.

The 2007 coinage is the mainstream attribution; a documented dissent below names a second, roughly contemporaneous coinage that some commentators credit as an independent origin of the same idea.

Scholars genuinely dispute where the wheel was invented; India, China and the Islamic world each have serious advocates and the earliest evidence is thin.
