Japanese potter who co-founded the Leach Pottery in England, then settled in Mashiko and made it a world center of folk ceramics. A leading figure of the mingei folk craft movement, he threw quiet, generous stoneware without marking it, saying the work should speak for itself, and Japan named him a Living National Treasure in 1955.
