Wool Combing Machine

The wool combing machine is a device that mechanizes wool combing, the step in worsted spinning that lays wool fibres parallel to each other and removes the short fibres before spinning. Edmund Cartwright, already known for his early power loom, patented a wool combing machine in 1790 and refined it with further patents over the following two years, and it is credited as the first successful mechanization of the combing stage of wool processing. Later inventors, including Josue Heilmann, Samuel Cunliffe Lister and Isaac Holden, continued to improve wool combing machinery through the nineteenth century, making it a standard part of industrial worsted mills.
