Pugmill

Ceramics and Pottery Tools

A pugmill, pug mill or pug is a machine that extrudes clay or other materials in a plastic state, or a similar machine used to triturate ore, with industrial applications in pottery, bricks, cement and parts of concrete and asphalt mixing. A typical pugmill is a horizontal boxlike chamber with a top inlet and a bottom discharge at the other end, holding two shafts of opposing paddles driven to mix material at its correct moisture content into a thoroughly blended mass within seconds; how well and how long it mixes depends on the number and size of its paddles, their swing arc and overlap, and the size and length of the chamber itself.

Facts
Origin
A 1913 edition of Websters Dictionary describes a clay pug mill as an upright shaft armed with projecting knives that revolves inside a hollow cylinder, tub or vat holding the clay; ceramics pug mills extrude clay bodies ready for shaping rather than grinding or mixing them, sometimes fitted with a vacuum system to remove trapped air. 1
