A cutting mat is a mat placed beneath a workpiece to protect the table or work surface underneath it while cutting, made of a material noticeably softer than a steel blade so the blade does not dull itself or gouge the surface below. In craft and hobby work a cutting mat is used for precise, clean cuts of paper, cardboard or textiles with a scalpel, craft knife or rotary cutter, and most mats are printed with a grid, commonly ruled every five or ten millimeters, that lets the user position, square and measure the workpiece directly on the cutting surface. Typical uses include textile cutting for patchwork and quilting and paper cutting for card making or architectural modeling.
