A single shaft ending in a hook, the whole toolkit of crochet. Sized from fine steel hooks for thread lace to chunky hooks for rugs, it has been made of bone, ivory, wood, steel and aluminum, and its shape has barely changed since the craft emerged in the nineteenth century.
