A hand tool used together with a drill bit or auger to bore holes, usually in wood, worked by applying pressure at the top while rotating the handle; when the bit's lead and cutting spurs are in good order the lead itself pulls the bit through the wood, and the user need press only enough to keep balance. The earliest carpenter's braces built with the tool's characteristic U-shaped, compound-cranked grip appeared in Flanders between 1420 and 1430.
