Temple (Weaving)

Spinning and Weaving Tools

A temple is an adjustable stretcher used on a loom to keep a woven fabric at a constant width and improve the quality of its edges. Weaving draws a fabric narrower as the weft interlaces with the warp; a temple counters this draw-in by holding the cloth at its intended width with sharp prongs set into the fabric at each edge, which lets weft pack in more evenly and reduces warp thread breakage from friction in the reed. Temples come in metal and wood, both with an adjustable-length shaft; wooden temples are lighter with straight, fine teeth, while metal temples carry wider, angled teeth better suited to gripping the thick edges of heavier fabric such as rugs. The tool is moved forward periodically to stay close to the fell, the edge where the weaving is actually taking place.

Not established by the sources consulted
The source documents the temple's present-day function and its two current forms, wood and metal, but gives no first-use date for the tool.
Origin
Temples are made in two forms: wooden temples are lighter, with straight, fine teeth, while metal temples carry wider, angled teeth better suited to gripping the thick edges of heavier fabric, which is why metal temples are the type usually recommended for rug weaving. 1

  • Use of temples section
The teeth on metal temples are angled and are wider at the base than the teeth on wooden temples.
  • Function section
Temples prevent this decrease by keeping fabrics at a fixed width, thus requiring more weft to enter the weave with each pass of the shuttle.
