Granny Square Pattern

A crocheted square motif worked in rounds outward from a central ring, typically combining clusters of double crochet stitches separated by chain spaces, traditionally in multiple colors that change with each round. Granny squares are almost always crocheted by hand rather than machine-made, and multiple small squares are commonly joined into larger pieces such as afghans, garments and bags; the earliest documented published pattern for a traditional granny square, credited to a Mrs. Phelps, appeared in the April 5, 1885 edition of Prairie Farmer magazine.
