Harrison Weir founded the National Cat Club in 1887, England's first cat registry, and served as its first president. The club functioned as both registry and governing body for the cat fancy until a rival registry, the Cat Club founded by Lady Marcus Beresford in 1898, split the field; the two merged into the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy in 1910.
