A pump drill is a simple hand-powered device that imparts a rapid rotating motion to a rod, used for fire making or for drilling holes in various materials. It consists of a drill shaft, a narrow board pierced through its center, a weight that acts as a flywheel, and a length of cord. The weight is fixed near the bottom of the shaft, and the pierced board is slipped over the top. The cord runs through a hole or slot near the top of the shaft and is tied to both ends of the board, sized so that at its lowest point the board rests just above the weight.
