A profile gauge, also called a contour gauge, is a tool for recording the cross-sectional shape of a surface. It consists of a set of steel or plastic pins held tightly against one another in a frame that keeps them parallel and in the same plane while letting each pin move independently, perpendicular to the frame. Pressed against an irregular object, the pins conform to its shape, and the gauge can then be used to draw that profile onto paper or copy it directly onto another workpiece.
