Taping Knife

A taping knife, or joint knife, is a drywall tool with a wide, flat blade for spreading joint compound, known as mud, over the seams and nail and screw indents of new drywall. It is also used to lay paper or fiberglass tape over seams, to patch holes, to smooth wall coverings and to create decorative wall finishes, and comes in common widths of five to twelve inches; a smaller version, the spackle knife, is used for patching small holes. A right-angle joint knife has an offset handle so it can apply compound into the inside corners where two walls meet.
