Devices used to hold a workpiece steady, or to hold two glued or joined pieces firmly together while an adhesive sets or a fastener is driven, rather than to cut or shape the wood itself. This includes bar, pipe, miter and flooring clamps, the C-clamp and F-clamp, the woodworking vise and its holdfast, bench dog and bench hook accessories, and workholding fixtures built into or set on a bench such as the shaving horse, sawhorse and workbench itself. The gripe, a specialized clamp used in traditional boatbuilding to hold a strake in place, belongs here for the same reason.
