In ceramics, a stilt is a small support used while firing glazed ware, placed to keep melting glaze from fusing separate pieces to each other or to the kiln itself, and is itself a form of kiln furniture. Some potters avoid needing stilts altogether by leaving the bottom of a piece unglazed, a practice known as dry footing; stilts found at archaeological sites, sometimes called pernettes there, can be used alongside other kiln furniture such as saggars to help support a case for local ceramic production.
