Treadle

Spinning and Weaving Tools

A treadle is a foot operated lever mechanism, worked by treading on it repeatedly, that converts the reciprocating up and down motion of a foot into continuous rotating motion, usually through a crank connected to a flywheel, or stores the motion as spring tension as in a pole lathe. Before electric power became widely available, treadles were the standard way to drive spinning wheels, looms, sewing machines, lathes, and saws, letting a single operator power a machine with their feet while keeping both hands free for the work itself. Treadle powered machines remain in everyday use in regions without reliable electrical infrastructure, and are kept in active use by artisans, hobbyists, and historical reenactors, who value the close, instinctive control a treadle gives over the pace of the work, letting the operator vary speed freely with no motor or added complexity. The word treadle comes from the Old English tredan, meaning to tread.
