A sewing gauge is a small ruler, typically six inches long, used for measuring short spaces. It is usually a metal scale marked in both inches and centimeters, fitted with a sliding pointer that is used much as a caliper is, and is commonly used to mark hems for alterations and to measure the intervals between pleats and buttonholes and the length of a buttonhole. With the slider anchored by a pin, it can also serve as a small compass for drawing arcs and circles; some models also include a button shank and a blunt point useful for turning corners right side out.
