A sewing machine needle is a specialized needle made for use in a sewing machine, distinct from an ordinary hand-sewing needle. It is made up of seven main parts: the shank, shoulder, shaft, groove, scarf, eye and point, each shaped to let the needle work with the machine's own mechanism rather than by hand.
