Scriber

A scriber is a hand tool used in metalworking to mark lines on a workpiece before cutting or machining, a process called scribing that is part of the broader craft of marking out. It is built as a steel rod with a hardened, tempered tip ground to an angle of thirty or forty degrees, some scribers carrying a point at each end; dragging the point across the surface leaves a thin, semi-permanent scratch that stays visible and precise where a pencil or ink mark would smear, rub off or simply be too imprecise to work to. Marking blue, a thin dye, is often brushed onto an uncoated metal surface first so the scribed line shows up more clearly against it.
