Rainbow Loom

Spinning and Weaving Tools

Rainbow Loom is a plastic pegboard tool used to weave small colorful rubber and plastic bands, called loom bands, into bracelets, charms and other decorative items. It was invented in 2010 by Cheong Choon Ng in Novi, Michigan, as a way to help his daughters make more elaborate rubber-band bracelets than they could weave on their fingers alone. The board itself is a plastic pegboard about 2 inches by 8 inches carrying rows of push-pin-style pegs, and a standard kit pairs the board with a crochet hook, C-shaped plastic clips, and hundreds of colored rubber bands used to hook bands from peg to peg in a chosen pattern before lifting the finished chain free. The toy became a widely sold craft item in the early 2010s, with the inventors company reporting sales of more than eight million loom units and forty million packets of bands worldwide by September 2014.

  • History section, first paragraph
He conceived the idea of a toy loom for rubber-band crafting after seeing his young daughters make rubber-band bracelets. He tried to show them how they could link the rubber bands together but was unsuccessful because of the large size of his fingers, so he stuck a scrap board with multiple rows of pegs on which the bands could be linked more easily.
