A pattern notcher is a tool used in patternmaking and sewing to cut a small notch into the edge of a paper sewing pattern. Notches mark where separate pattern pieces are meant to align with each other during construction, and a notch cut into the paper itself has an advantage over a mark drawn on the paper: the notch remains visible and usable whether the pattern piece is lying face up or face down on the fabric, where a drawn mark would not be.
