Miter Box

Woodworking Tools

A woodworking appliance used to guide a hand saw for making precise cuts, usually 45-degree miter cuts. Traditional miter boxes are simply built of wood; adjustable miter boxes are made of metal and can be set to cut any angle from 45 to 90 degrees. Although powered miter saws have replaced it in many workshops, users of the manual miter box point to its accuracy, safety, quiet operation, low cost and small footprint as advantages a powered saw does not share.

Facts
Origin
Traditional miter boxes are simple wooden guides that hold a handsaw at a set angle, most often 45 degrees, while adjustable metal miter boxes can be set anywhere from 45 to 90 degrees. Despite being superseded in many shops by the powered miter saw, miter boxes are still favored by some woodworkers as more accurate, safer, quieter, cheaper and more compact. 1
