A lettering guide is a template, usually a sheet of plastic with cut-out letters, numbers and other shapes, used to draw uniform lettering by hand. Architects, illustrators and other technical drafters relied on lettering guides through most of the twentieth century to keep text on drawings and plans consistent, before computer-aided drafting made them largely unnecessary. Beyond technical drafting, lettering guides have also been used to help people with limited literacy practice writing, and some political campaigns distributed simple cardboard guides carrying a candidate name to help voters write it in by hand.
