Woven and coiled vessels and structures built by hand from plant fiber, splint, cane, willow or similar flexible material, one of the American Craft Council's own discipline categories. Belongs here: basket weaving in any regional or historical tradition, coiled and plaited basketry, and figures and institutions whose primary craft is basketry. Does not belong here: weaving on a loom, which is grouped under Fiber even though the two disciplines share hand and material skills, because loom weaving follows a different tool and technique lineage. No entity is minted here yet; the category stands ready for the coming width wave.

The oldest known baskets were discovered in Faiyum in upper Egypt and have been carbon dated to between 10,000 and 12,000 years old, earlier than any established dates for archaeological evidence of pottery vessels, which were too heavy and fragile to suit far-ranging hunter-gatherers.
