Wilhelm Steinitz defeated Johannes Zukertort ten games to five, with five draws, across a twenty-game match split between New York, St Louis and New Orleans, becoming the first player recognized as World Chess Champion under a title both men had agreed to play for in advance. Steinitz had informally claimed the mantle after beating Adolf Anderssen back in 1866, without ever using the words world championship at the time, so historians mark 1886, not 1866, as the moment the title became a real, contested office rather than a reputation.

When did the World Chess Championship really begin?
Wilhelm Steinitz beat Adolf Anderssen in 1866 and later called himself world champion from that year on, but he made no known reference to a world championship at the time, and no formal title or agreed stakes were on the table. The 1886 match against Zukertort, by contrast, was played for an explicitly agreed title. Most historians now treat 1886 as the first official championship, but Steinitz's own later claim to 1866 was never fully retracted by the chess world, and some historians still credit an unbroken reign from that year.
