A punch is a tool used to indent a surface or to create a hole through it. It usually consists of a hard metal rod with a narrow tip at one end and a broad, flat butt at the other; in use, the narrow end is pressed against the target surface and the broad end is struck with a hammer or mallet, so the blunt force of the blow travels down the rod's body and is focused sharply onto the small area under the tip. Woodworkers typically use a ball-peen hammer to strike a punch.
