The Mingei International Museum is a nonprofit institution in San Diego, California, devoted to folk art, craft and design from around the world. Founded in 1974, with its building opening in 1978, it is housed in the historic House of Charm on the Plaza de Panama in Balboa Park. Its collection of about 17,500 objects, drawn from 141 countries and ranging from the third century BCE to contemporary work, includes pottery, textiles, wood carvings and masks; its name, coined by Japanese scholar Soetsu Yanagi, combines characters meaning all people and art.
