Shortwave Listening

Radio and Signal Hobbies

Listening to shortwave radio broadcasts, especially distant international and amateur stations, using a dedicated shortwave receiver rather than transmitting anything oneself. Hobbyists, often called SWLs, log the stations they hear, chase distant or hard-to-catch signals, and pursue confirmation postcards called QSL cards from the stations they report; the hobby needs no license, unlike amateur radio operation, since it involves receiving only.
