Parachuting is the descent of a person through the atmosphere using a parachute. In sport parachuting, a jumper exits an aircraft, free falls for a period, deploys a steerable canopy, and flies it down to a landing area. Skydiving is often used as another name for the sport, though the term can also refer more narrowly to the free fall portion before the canopy opens. Parachuting is practiced for recreation and competition as well as for military deployment, emergency escape, and reaching remote areas, and international competition is organized by the Skydiving Commission of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale.
