Constructing proportionally scaled, working miniature representations of full-sized machines, a branch of metalworking that emphasizes hand artisanry over mass production. The term was already in use by 1888, and in the United States the overlapping term "home shop machinist" is often used instead. Once also a commercial and industrial pursuit, model engineering is now mainly a hobby, most popular in industrialized countries with a long engineering heritage reaching back to the age of steam power, chiefly the United Kingdom, the United States, northwestern Europe and the industrialized Commonwealth countries.
