Macrame

Needlecraft-Adjacent and Braiding Hobbies

Macrame is a form of textile made using knotting techniques rather than weaving or knitting, built chiefly from the square or reef knot and various combinations of half hitches. Sailors historically took up the craft with particular enthusiasm, producing everything from ornamental coverings for knife handles to decorative fittings for ships. One named variation, Cavandoli macrame, uses mainly the double half-hitch knot to build geometric and free-form patterns similar to weaving. In its more everyday, present-day form, macrame is used to make belts in leather and fabric and friendship bracelets exchanged among schoolchildren and teenagers, and macrame jewelry and other decorative pieces are commonly sold at venues such as theme parks and seasonal fairs.
