Live Steam is the practice of building and operating small steam-powered machines and devices, most often replicas or scale models of steam locomotives, traction engines and stationary steam engines, for heritage, museum, entertainment or recreational purposes rather than for revenue-earning transport or power generation. Live steam models range from pocket-sized stationary engines to substantial scale steamrollers and traction engines, commonly built at 1:4 or 1:3 scale, distinguishing the hobby from otherwise similar electric or internal-combustion powered replicas built to look as though they run on steam.
