Figure painting, also called miniature painting, is the hobby of painting miniature or model figures, either as a standalone pursuit or as part of another activity that uses models, such as role-playing games, wargames, or military modeling. Alongside the painting itself, the hobby includes scenic basing, which ranges from simple textured pastes and static grass on gaming bases to elaborate display bases and full dioramas, and can also involve sculpting to customize or scratch-build models. As figure painting has grown into a hobby independent of miniature gaming, online forums, galleries, and dedicated painting conventions have developed for painters to share and compete over their work.
