Drone Racing is a motorsport in which participants pilot radio controlled quadcopter drones fitted with an onboard digital video camera, viewing the live feed on a small screen built into their handheld controller or, more commonly, through a head mounted display known as FPV goggles, while competitors race to be the fastest to navigate a course of obstacles, echoing full sized air racing in miniature. The sport originated in 2011 in Karlsruhe, Germany, when a group of amateur drone enthusiasts began organising informal races among themselves, and it is a distinct pursuit from the live Radio-Controlled Modeling hobby already on this atlas, which covers the broader practice of building and flying scale and hobby radio controlled aircraft rather than first person view competitive racing specifically.
