Deck tennis is a game played by mariners on the decks of cargo and passenger ships, combining elements of tennis and quoits and played with a rubber disk, ring, or rope ring thrown back and forth across a net rather than struck with a racket. The game has since been standardized in a number of countries under other names, including tennikoit and ring tennis. American sources from the 1930s and 1940s credit Cleve F. Schaffer with originating or formally establishing the game, and it has gone on to be played competitively on land as well as at sea: in 1981 Mariano Herrera and Alejandro Nougues of Argentina won the first Deck Tennis World Championship, held on a beach at Punta del Este, Uruguay.
