Benchmarking, also called benchmark hunting or, in the United Kingdom, trigpointing, is a hobby in which participants find benchmarks, permanent survey markers that designate a known elevation, though hobbyists often extend the term to include triangulation stations or other reference marks as well. Like geocaching, the activity has grown in popularity since 1995, driven by online data on the location of survey marks and by the rise of hobbyist websites devoted to logging finds; in the United Kingdom, where the pursuit is called trigpointing after the country's own triangulation pillars, searching for trig points is more popular than hunting benchmarks.
