Maria Martinez

Also Known As Maria Montoya Martinez
Ceramics and Pottery Figures

Potter of San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico, who with her husband Julian revived and perfected the black-on-black ware: burnished blackware whose matte designs emerge from a smothered firing. Working by coil and open firing, entirely without a wheel, she made pueblo pottery world famous and taught the techniques freely so her community shared the livelihood. Birth Year

Sources disagree on Maria Martinez's exact birth year. Her own Wikipedia biography states she "was born c. 1886 or 1887," citing different sources for each year, while its infobox and opening line both settle on "c. 1887." Her birth predates reliable civil recordkeeping at San Ildefonso Pueblo, so no document resolves the one-year gap.
