A deliberate slowing-down of clothing, set against fast fashion's speed and volume: local artisans, hand-sewn and small-batch production, durable construction and garments meant to be repaired rather than replaced. The name borrows its whole logic from the Slow Food movement, prizing quality, environmental responsibility and fair labor practice over throughput. It gives the home atlas's own sewing craft, and the broader upcycling ethic, a name for the economics that make hand production worth choosing over a factory line.
The 2007 coinage is the mainstream attribution; a documented dissent below names a second, roughly contemporaneous coinage that some commentators credit as an independent origin of the same idea.

Kate Fletcher's 2007 Ecologist article is the mainstream attribution for the term slow fashion, but Georgia Straight fashion writer Angela Murrills independently coined the closely related term slow clothes movement around the same period, and some commentary credits her as a parallel, not derivative, source of the same idea. The two coinages arose in different publications with no evidence one drew directly on the other.
