Pottery Gauge

Ceramics and Pottery Tools

A pottery gauge is a tool used in pottery to keep a run of pots thrown on a potter's wheel uniform in size and shape. Some gauges simply check that a pot's height and diameter stay constant from piece to piece as a potter throws a matching set; others double as a template or shaping guide held against the clay as it turns. In archaeology, the same term names a profile gauge used to record and compare the shape of excavated pots.

Facts
Introduced When (Circa)
Illustrated among studio pottery tools in Frederick Hurten Rhead's self-illustrated 1910 book Studio Pottery, the earliest dated appearance found in the sources consulted. 1
Origin
Archaeologists use the same term differently from studio potters: there, a pottery gauge means a profile gauge used to record and compare the shape of excavated pots, distinct from the studio sense of a sizing tool checked against a run of pots thrown on the wheel. 1
