The hobby of receiving and identifying distant radio or television signals, or of making two-way radio contact with distant stations, pursued across amateur radio, shortwave listening and other radio services alike rather than confined to any one of them. Practitioners, some casual and some highly dedicated, use equipment ranging from an ordinary AM car radio to shortwave receivers, VHF and UHF scanners, custom-built antennas and modern software-defined radios to seek out signals from far away, logging what they receive using the standardized SINPO code and often writing to the broadcaster or contacted station to request a QSL card as written confirmation of the reception or contact. DX clubs bring enthusiasts together to trade tips, logs and confirmed catches.

DXing is the pursuit of contacting the most distant possible stations, practiced primarily among licensed amateur radio operators as a competitive branch of the hobby.
The ARRL administers the DX Century Club (DXCC) award, the best known formal recognition program for amateur radio DXing achievement.
