Woodworking Planes and Shaping Tools

Hand tools that remove wood in thin shavings or fine amounts to flatten, smooth, chamfer or otherwise shape a surface using muscle power alone, rather than an electric motor. This includes the many styles of bench and specialty plane, from the jack plane and jointer plane used to true rough stock through to the block plane, spokeshave, drawknife, card scraper, rasp and surform used for finer shaping and finishing work, along with the sanding block used to hold sandpaper for hand sanding. A stationary or motorized version of the same function, such as the thickness planer, jointer machine or power sander, is grouped instead under woodworking power tools.
