A measuring rod is a tool used to physically measure lengths and to survey areas of various sizes. Most measuring rods are round or square in cross-section, though some are made as flat boards, and many carry markings at regular intervals along their length so a length can be read off directly. The measuring rod is thought to have been in use before other length-measuring tools such as a line, a chain or a steel tape came into use. It is a distinct tool from a ranging rod, used to mark a sight line in surveying, and from a leveling rod, used together with a surveyor's level to read a height difference.
