A beam compass is a compass fitted with a beam and sliding sockets, or cursors, used for drawing and dividing circles larger than an ordinary pair of compasses can reach. It can be a single dedicated instrument, or improvised on the spot from individual sockets fitted onto any suitably straight and rigid beam, which lets a woodworker or drafter mark out an arc or circle far wider than their standard compass allows.
