Coping Saw

Woodworking Tools

A type of bow saw used to cut intricate external shapes and interior cut-outs in woodworking or carpentry, widely used to cut moldings for a coped joint rather than a mitred one, and occasionally used for fretwork, though its blades are always thicker and coarser-cutting than a dedicated fretsaw's and so cannot match a fretsaw for intricacy, particularly in thin material. Despite that limit, a coping saw can cut slight bends in the work, letting a careful user cut circles as well as straight lines.

Facts
Introduced When (Circa)
The coping saw was most likely invented in the middle of the 16th century, following innovations in metallurgy and the invention of the spring-driven clock. 1
Origin
Metallurgical advances allowed stronger, more flexible rolled-steel blades; the coping saw was later paired with the Chevalet de Marqueterie, invented in 1780, to cut a whole stack of veneers at a single angle. 1
