Honing oil is a liquid, solution, or emulsion used to aid the cutting or grinding of metal, most often applied to a sharpening stone to keep an edge tool blade sharp. It protects the stone surface and carries away the metal grit, or swarf, produced as the blade is honed, and different formulations suit different jobs: a heavy oil such as motor oil can clog a stone, while a very light oil will not carry the swarf away effectively. Honing oil is also called machining oil, tool oil, cutting fluid, or cutting oil, and beyond sharpening it is used in machine shops to carry away heat during metal cutting.
