Radial Arm Saw

Woodworking Tools

A radial arm saw is a cutting machine with a circular saw mounted on a sliding horizontal arm above the workpiece. Invented by Raymond DeWalt in 1922, it was the primary tool for cutting long stock to length until the power miter saw replaced it in that role in the 1970s. Beyond simple crosscuts to length, a radial arm saw can be fitted with a dado blade to cut dado, rabbet or half-lap joints, and on some models the blade can be turned parallel to the fence to make a rip cut.
