Mattock

Woodworking Tools

A mattock is a hand tool used for digging, prying and chopping. Similar to the pickaxe, it has a long handle and a stout head combining either a vertical axe blade with a horizontal adze, called a cutter mattock, or a pick and an adze, called a pick mattock. A cutter mattock is similar in shape to the firefighting tool called a Pulaski. In North America the mattock is also commonly known as a grub axe.
