Woodworking Chisels and Carving Tools

Tools with a wedge shaped cutting edge driven by hand pressure or a mallet blow to carve, pare or cut away wood, rather than a blade that is drawn across the surface the way a plane or knife is. This includes the ordinary bench chisel and its many specialized forms such as the corner chisel, fishtail chisel, Japanese chisel and slick, along with related carving and mortising tools such as the burin, the twybil used to chop mortises, and the froe, which is driven into a log with a mallet to split it along the grain. A carving knife whose primary role is shaping wood, such as the crooked knife, is grouped here rather than under woodworking knives and blades.
