A mallet is a hand tool used to strike another object or tool, most often made of wood or rubber and, compared with a maul or beetle, smaller and typically fitted with a proportionately large head. Because its striking face is usually softer than steel, a mallet is the tool of choice for driving a wood chisel, seating joinery or striking anything a metal hammer would mar or damage, and it is a basic tool of woodworking, sculpture, leatherworking and many other hand crafts.
